Self-care is important all throughout the year, but it can be even more important during the hot, summer months when we’re constantly out with friends and family.

Self-care is all about taking steps and measures to improve upon your overall health. It starts with understanding and focusing on only things you can improve upon yourself, and not that of others that you can’t effect.

The key elements of self-care include:

  1. Self-awareness – Being aware of your state of health. Examples can include trips to the doctor, etc.
  2. Healthy eating – Focusing on eating healthy and nutritious foods
  3. Overall health – Monitoring your health information in order to make appropriate health decisions
  4. Physical activity – Stay active!
  5. Risk avoidance – Basic items such as remaining careful and avoiding elements that could cause harm to your well-being
  6. Hygiene – Adopting good hygiene practices

We often overlook and neglect the elements of self-care because life can get busy and it’s hard to keep up with all of the demands that life throws at us.

It’s important that we in society turns off the auto-pilot that we can sometimes fall into. If you have problems doing physical activities, for example, do consciously. Try to pay attention to how your body is reacting to the movements. Or if you’re eating foods, it’s critical that you know what you’re eating and how much is an appropriate amount.

Another element of self-care is starting with easily achievable, daily goals. Try slowly eating more and more fruit, going for a walk, or talking with your friends more. Don’t try and change everything in one day or week, take your time! Small, basic steps will give you confidence and make these overall life improvements easier and more attainable.

Finally, once you determine a date to meet a goal, your mind will have a concrete time to get ready to start. This will significantly impact your motivation in a positive way. And always remember to write down your progresses, even the smallest ones. This will boost your self-esteem and will help you to keep on going and improving your life.
